Of the more than two-dozen bones in the foot, the heel bone is the largest. That means the heel is the focus of much of the constant pounding we put on our feet when we walk, run, jump, or even spend long stretches of time standing. If there’s something off in our gait, or perhaps we wear poorly made footwear, the stress we place on the heel bone can lead to problems.
One of the common complaints our doctors of podiatric medicine at Tender Foot Care hear about from our patients is pain resulting from bony growths on the underside of the heel bone. These painful growths, which we commonly refer to as heel spurs, can be as long as a half an inch. These come about because of excessive strain on the muscles and ligaments of the foot, or when the membrane protecting the foot has been torn away. The stretching of the connective tissue between the heel and the ball of the foot — called the fascia — is another possible cause. Obesity has also been found to place stress upon the heel.
Before arriving at a diagnosis, our doctors of podiatric medicine conduct a thorough evaluation that includes a hands-on examination of the foot, an observation of how each patient walks, and potentially using X-rays to confirm the growth. At our state-of-the-art facility, we provide an array of treatment options for our patients depending on the severity of their condition. These may include medication, specially designed shoes and custom-made orthotics, and stretches. In some advanced cases where the pain is severe, corticosteroid injections or surgery may be recommended.
