An ingrown toenail (onychocryptosis) is a common condition frequently seen in the big toenail. It’s caused by pressure from the ingrowth of the nail edge into the skin of the toe. Once the edge of the nail breaks through the skin, inflammation results. While at first this may present some minor discomfort, if left untreated, an infection may develop. Symptoms of a problematic ingrown toenail include: redness around the toenail, swelling of the toe around the nail, pain and tenderness in the toe along one of both sides of the nail, and an infection of the tissue surrounding the toenail. There are many causes of an ingrown toenail. Footwear that doesn’t provide much room for the toes, cutting toenails too short (or not straight), having curved toenails, or injuring a toenail have all been associated with the development of an ingrown toenail.
If you are suffering from diabetes, it’s important to make sure your lower extremities are well cared for. It’s always best to take a proactive approach to health matters. If you think you have an ingrown toe nail, schedule an appointment with an experienced podiatrist for a prompt evaluation and care.
